Duke: “The Ultimate Retriever and Family Dog”
As hunters and dog enthusiasts ourselves, we understand the profound bond between you and your loyal four-legged companions. We have owned many hunting dogs, small and large breeds. With no hesitation, our favorite was a black Labrador retriever we named Duke.
We received Duke (a six week old puppy) from my brother as a Christmas gift for our family. Duke was a purebred Black Labrador with a long and verified ancestry. At six months old we paid to have Duke trained to retrieve game. Expecting that it would take up to 6 months to train Duke, within 8 weeks it was very obvious that Duke’s retrieving skills were deeply embedded in his DNA. He was ready to start hunting and we were amazed at how fast he learned. Duke loved the water and hunting for birds. He could hold his position as long as needed and would never fail to retrieve all the birds.
He also loved to go squirrel hunting with us and he quickly learned how important it was to be quiet and hold his position until we gave him the “Go” command to retrieve the squirrels. When we talk about dogs for hunting…for us there were none better than Duke.
Yes, Duke was an amazing hunting dog but more importantly he was our family dog. He loved to go swimming and riding on the jet skis with our kids. Wherever the kids went Duke was sure to follow. One of his favorite things to do was running as fast as he could and jumping off the dock into the water to retrieve a ball, a stick or whatever we might throw. He would do this over and over from morning to night time, as long as we had the energy to throw something.
In our opinion, Duke was the “Ultimate Retriever”. He lived every day to please us. We were blessed to have him as part of our family for 10 years before he passed on. We hope you find your “Duke” some day!
